Death by choking

July 1, 2013

I’ve died in my dreams in many ways over the years -- broke my neck diving into a body of water, been shot in the back and fallen forth into a river, amongst other deaths -- but last night was the first time I’ve ever died by choking.

I’m writing this almost 24 hours after the dream, so I don’t remember how it started, but I do recall that there was something wrong with my throat. For some reason I decided to drink something, and shortly after doing that I began choking. It felt like my throat was constricted, that something was very wrong. I couldn’t breathe.

For some reason it felt like it might help if I moved my head from left to right to try to find a way to breathe. It seemed to help a little bit, but it wasn’t helping fast enough, and I knew I was going to die, and began panicking. In my panic it never occurred to me to try something like the Heimlich Maneuver on myself; I was panicking, plus there wasn’t much time left.

As I was passing out I did something that forced a purplish fluid to shoot out of my throat and mouth and onto the wall in front of me, but it wasn’t enough to help me, and I blacked out.

When I woke up in bed I assumed that I must be congested, or something else was wrong, maybe I was face-down in my pillow. But it was none of those things. I felt perfectly fine, except for the fact that I felt like I had just died.
