I thought I was finished with passing out (syncope), but twice today I almost passed out again. The background to the story is that I went to the ER again with abdominal pain, and after another CT scan (with contrast), the doctors changed their thinking in regards to what my problem is. During this time I was in a fair amount of pain and also felt like throwing up, so they gave me morphine for the pain and something else for the nausea.
They let me go home a few hours after the morphine dose, but I knew something was wrong. I was hungy and they told me I could eat, so I went to my favorite restaurant, where I nearly passed out the first time. I got out of the restaurant as soon as I felt the symptoms, got into my car and cranked the air conditioning on as fast and cold as it would go, and felt better after a little while.
Thinking I was better, I decided to stop at my favorite ice cream shop on the way home because I didn’t eat much before running out of the restaurant. After I placed my order I knew I was about to pass out, and all I could tell the people there was that I needed to go outside. I sat on a bench outside with my head between my legs, and one of the people came out to check on me. I told him what was going on and told him it felt like the feeling was passing. They were all very nice and gave me my milkshake for free, though I want to go back tomorrow if I’m feeling better to pay them back.
I assume this happened because I had the morphine on an empty stomach, but I don’t know that for a fact. It may have been the contrast for the CT scan, or a combination of things. One thing I do know is that after you’ve passed out once or twice you begin to know the symptoms pretty early, so you (usually) have at least a minute or so before you go down.
