Can't wake up from a dream

September 22, 2015

I’m staying at a friend’s house currently, and every morning follows the same routine: We wake up at 5am, and while she gets ready for work I meditate. She comes out of the bathroom and bedroom at around 5:45am, and then she’s out the door at 6am. I usually set the alarm for 7:30 or 8am and go back to bed until then.

This morning I woke up inside a dream, then realized I was still asleep and tried to wake myself up for real, but I couldn’t do it. It was really a multi-layer dream (as in the movie Inception), and each time I thought I was awake I was really still dreaming. After a long battle of trying to wake up, I finally said to myself, “C’mon, this is enough, you need to wake up!” But I was still asleep.

Fortunately I was only there for a few moments, trying to think of what to do next, when my alarm went off and that “woke up” my body, or helped me re-attach to my body, or whatever it was that happened. It’s been a long time since I the last time I couldn’t wake up from a dream, and it was relatively scary, as things go. (The scary part is that you are awake inside the dream state, and you can’t convince your physical body to wake up, and you don’t know if you ever will wake up.)
