Walk away for a while
I just read this quote from Mel Gibson on mtv.com, about why he got away from acting for seven years, and based on my my own experience, I think it's right on, and well worth sharing:
Surprised by lucid dreams this morning
I was pleasantly surprised by a long series of semi-lucid dreams this morning. I went to bed last night expecting nothing, because I certainly haven’t done anything “right” lately, except maybe getting a little more sleep. The dreams this morning were both funny and long, and included my wife, J, and D from work, and even the guy that built our house.
A very nice man died this morning
A very nice co-worker died at work this morning. I’m told that he had a heart attack, and the local EMT’s could not do anything to revive him. I don’t know his exact age, but I believe he was in his 50s.
I didn’t know him very well, though we chatted briefly once or twice a week. But he was universally hailed as the nicest man at work.
"It was too safe for me"
I don't watch CSI, and I didn't know William Petersen was leaving, but after reading this article, which including the following quote, I can dig why he is leaving:
"The reason I'm leaving is because I'm afraid I'm becoming too comfortable," says Petersen.
"North by one"
A long dream about work, cleaning out the building, and getting ready for something. I keep using this phrase, "North by one." It's almost like swearing on a stack of bibles.
There's this one woman who is with us, and she's supposed to be very irresistible ... this is a dream involving Paul Newman ... I want to call the woman Ann Hathaway or Ann Northcut ...
And this one man says something like "I'm going to go deal with the girl". Before he goes, this other guy says "I swear that I will not do something with the girl. North by one."
Dream of a conference call
Dream of a conference call while at work ... as we're waiting for someone in a conference call to show up, I realize that I've been having this recurring dream for two weeks, and this conference call each time. The room we're calling from is our work area, and we have an open office plan. I can't think of the guy's name, but he reminds me of Frazier.
Something like my actual work environment
Just want to note a recurring dream, something like a mirror of my current work situation. Two brothers, a large company, I'm working there ...
A very long dream that began with me, going down a hallway very fast, at the office ... I'm almost levitating, and going fast, and the mailroom lady got upset and raised a big commotion.
Short dream notes
Dream about my wife and her brother ... my wife asks me if I want to be a cop in the city or the country ...
A co-worker ends up working at one of the grocery stores, and I'm going to get my prescriptions filled. The pharmacy is really slow, and she comes over to help ...
That dream goes away, and we end up talking about work, and the IT boss is looking for a successor. They have a company from Boulder come in and try to get an independent opinion on who should take over, and they say that nobody is ready to take over.
Cross-country dream skiing
Came up from sleeping on the couch downstairs ... just had a dream about a lady at work that would always smile at me. I was doing some kind of cross-country skiing thing, not on snow, but on air ... and as I came around this turn, I could see her coming the other way, and there was no way for me to get away from her ... I had to talk to her. I tried to say hello and keep going, but she stops and asks if I'll be at work Monday or Tuesday, something like that.
Job interview, push versus pull
Walking on a campus, or maybe a hotel facility with a woman ... I'm apparently interviewing for a job with her. My approach is something like "I'll work for free, and if you like my work, we'll go from there."
She refers to this as a "push" (compared to a "pull"). I think she's talking about recruiting as being a pull, and what I'm doing as a push.
