Buddha means "aware"

January 10, 2010

I just read this quote from a terrific book named "The Zen Teachings of Bodhidharma":

"Buddha is Sanskrit for 'aware', or 'miraculously aware'."

I really like that, because it refers to something I've talked about with several other people about in regards to Zen meditation.

A lot of people think that Zen meditation is about relaxing or going to sleep, but really, the proper attitude is to be highly alert. You should be like a deer in the woods, who is constantly looking for predators. Or perhaps like a frog who sits still for a long, long time, and then when a fly comes by -- Zap! -- he grabs it.

I was going to add much more here, but let me just say today that there are several different types of meditation, but Zen meditation is one where you do stay alert and aware, or as that quote says, "miraculously aware."
