Back to the 1990s

July 1, 2014

I took a nap this afternoon, and I don’t know why, but I was transported back to the very early 1990s. I was in a vivid dream, and back in a familiar building. As I looked around, some cubicles were being torn down, and they were getting closer to my cubicle.

My boss came up, and I don’t recall if he said anything, but I apologized for not having been at work for a long time. I knew that I had been ill, and I was trying to get back to work today, though I was obviously still very sick. I was sweating profusely, not from nervousness but from the illness, and was having trouble with my balance as well.

As I was trying to talk to my boss about what I should do, the man who first hired me out of college came up from behind me and gave me a big bear hug. Although he wasn’t my manager in this new company, we both worked here, and in fact he was hired first and recommended that they hire me. So he gave me this big hug and welcomed me back, and then left me with my new manager.

Something happened at that time, I think they my manager said “Welcome back” loudly, and then I heard some applause over the speakers in the building. I looked around and saw a few familiar faces, and then heard the applause again, and saw one guy in the back pointing at his computer, indicating that he was triggering an applause soundtrack.

I don’t remember what happened next, but I found myself walking around the building. I had to go the bathroom back here in the real world, so I remember looking for a bathroom in the building, but they were all being repaired. I then came across a few more people I knew in the back of the building, and said hello to them, and they welcomed me back.

I went back to my cubicle, but it had been torn down already. I was concerned about what this meant, because I was feeling guilt over being gone so long, but my manager told me I had a better office in the back.

We went to an office in the back of the building, and when we walked in I found the office to be mostly a bright yellow with several green plants which stood out in stark contrast to all of the yellow. It was gaudy, but I liked it.

As we walked into the office we walked past a man who looked like a mad scientist type. He had his back to the door, but I could see his side as we walked past him, and he was quite a sight. After we passed him we went around the other side of a half-wall, where we came upon a desk and some sort of computer. There were also some shelving units against the wall farthest from the office entrance, and a window above that. Some of the plants draped down the half wall and nearly onto the desk. I thought it was interesting, and nice.

A third man was with us. He was younger, and I learned that he was the systems administrator, which had once been my job here. He said my account was still active, but my password had been changed. In fact, as he logged in using my account information he told me that the current password was “fetwordstar”, all lower case. He turned to my manager and proudly said that it had been changed with a script he wrote to automate things, and with that he told me to change my password soon, and then left.

While he was logging in I continued to sweat profusely, uncontrollably. I was also wobbly, nearly falling over three times before finally leaning against the metal shelving units behind me. I was in deep trouble physically, but for some reason I insisted in trying to go on.

I looked at my manager and said, “Well, what can I do, how can I help?” He looked at me and said, “You’re thinking performance, right? No, I have something else for you...”, but his voice drifted away and I may have passed out in the dream, because in the next moment I was laying in my bed. I wished I could go back there and hear what he wanted me to do, but after a few moments I realized I couldn’t go back, not right now anyway.

I don’t know what triggered this dream, because I haven’t worked at that place in 22 years, and I don’t think of it very often. That being said, I have had a few dreams like this, because I know that I’ve been in this building in my dreams before, and that this building is not the same building I worked in back in 1992.

Other dreams this morning

As a quick note, I had another long dream this morning of doing something with at least one old friend (Chris S), and we were in a large city, like New York or maybe London. At the end of the dream I had a map out, and was trying to figure out how to get back to my car. My friend said it had to do with something like 22nd Street and another street that I kept getting wrong, something to do with 333 or 424, but it kept changing.

I think we were here for some sort of educational purpose, but it’s now 12 hours after that dream, and I can’t remember much of it. I just wanted to note it here.
