Categories of out of body experiences (OBEs)

March 7, 2017

I just read a story about a woman who died on the operating table and was brought back to life, and her story reminded me of “categories” of things I’ve experienced during OBEs. I’ll keep this short and just make it an overview.

1) Stay in the physical realm

One thing that can happen is that you can have an OBE and stay in the physical realm, i.e., here on Earth, in the same living space as your body. Of all the things that happen, I think this is the most rare, and it takes a lot of intentional effort. I’ve written about it here, here, here, here, here, here, and in many other posts. Along with the “body switching” events described below, these are the only types of OBEs that I’m interested in because they are the only ones that can ever be “proven” to be real. (Precognitive events can also be proven, but I rarely have those during OBEs.)

2) Pulled backwards down a tunnel

A second thing that happens is that you have an OBE and are almost immediately pulled down some sort of tunnel at what feels like a very fast speed. I’m pretty sure that I have always been pulled backwards, and occasionally it feels like someone is there with me, though they never communicate with me. Sometimes I see things go by as I am “flying through space,” but more often I’m just being pulled through a dark space. It feels like being pulled through a tunnel, but I know nothing at all about the tunnel. Also, I have never been able to fight this. It’s not a horrible feeling that you want to fight, but I used to fight it, and now I just go for the ride. Some of these stories are here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

3) Pulled around, but not down the tunnel

Another thing that can happen is that you pop out of the body and are pulled around by some force, and you also can’t fight it. One time when this happened I was sleeping on a mattress on the floor at a friend’s house, and I popped out of the body and was then pulled on the floor towards the front door. Then the pulling stopped, then I was pulled out the back door. I landed in the grass behind the house, and could hear all of the bugs in the grass, including crickets and something that kept buzzing by me. The primary example of this is this story. Here’s another short example.

4) Visions of the future

I have had at least 10-20 visions of the future that have come true, and one of them happened during an OBE where I saw a dog die. The way he later died was exactly how I saw it. I link to at least eight of these stories on this page, and here’s a funny one.

5) In some other realm

Most of the times when I have an OBE I end up in something I can only describe as another realm that is almost a parallel version of this universe. For instance, if I am in my apartment when the OBE starts, I am then immediately in another “parallel” apartment that mimics my current apartment. On a few occasions I have been able to toggle back and forth between Earth and this other realm a few times to compare the two, but that has been rare. A few example stories are here and here.

6) In another body

At least 3-4 times that I can recall I have gone immediately from the body that I’ve known here on Earth since this birth, and “woken up” in another body. The other body always feels very heavy, and one time I “woke up” in another body that I believe to have been in a coma. To date I haven’t been able to maintain this state for long, though one time I was able to drag the other body into the bathroom to see what it looked like in the bathroom mirror, but that scared me and I immediately woke up in my usual body. Example stories are here, here, here, here, and here.

The other woman’s story

The story I read is in a book by Charles Tart titled, The End of Materialism: How Evidence of the Paranormal Is Bringing Science and Spirit Together, and the woman who died on the operating table is named Pam Reynolds. Her story starts like this: “There was a sensation like being pulled, but not against your will. I was going on my own accord, because I wanted to go ... The feeling was like going up in an elevator real fast. And there was a sensation, but it wasn’t a bodily, physical sensation. It was like a tunnel, but it wasn’t a tunnel.”

I’ll write more about all of this over time, but for today I just wanted to share her story, and show that it coincides with one of the things that can happen during an OBE.
